Toll Roads in Minnesota? Well, sort of….

Posted: May 16, 2005 in News

Today marks the beginning of “Toll Roads” in Minnesota. The difference between this and what occurs in say NY? These are optional.

http://www.mnpass.org tells the story of how you can pay (up to 2 hours) to ride in express lanes that will get you out of traffic. So basically the state is telling me that the more money I make, the easier my commute will be? Wow. So public roads are now revenue streams?

Why am I complaining though. Out east this is nothing new. People pay sometimes $10 or more JUST to get to work, and out there, its not optional. So what really bugs me about this? Well in order to participate you have to rent a transponder for $2 a month, or you cannot participate.

Hmmm, so they are going to charge me money to take my money? Boy these truely are fun times to be alive, huh?

I know in Maryland, I pay $5 to get to school (which could potentially be $7 if I don’t take the backroads and skip the DE toll). Of course I live here, so it’s not much of a big deal to pay every once in a while.

But I know in Baltimore, traffic is horrible. I’m still all for an express lane or reversing the roads during a certain time. For example, in the morning rush, most people head South. So make a Northbound lane (or a center lane) reverse to Southbound in the morning and Northbound in the evening. Sure, it’d take some work getting used to and building it, but *I* think it’s worth it.

As far as I know, we don’t pay a monthly fee on the transponders for tolls. It’s a one time thing, I’m pretty sure.

Yeah I guess its always nice to have options at least, right?

I live so far out in the suburbs that it doesnt really affect me as far as traffic goes. Although I used to communicate into downtown for work a few years back, so I can see where this will benefit alot of people.

It has yet to be seen if it will be effective. Not many people have used the new toll road on the first few days (I think something like less than a thousand people) so it could very well be a flop, but it also helps people who don’t pay for it. One less car on the road is one less car on the road after all 😉
