Chugging along….

Posted: February 5, 2010 in Friends, Fun, Work

Hey everyone, just thought I’d stop in and say I’m still alive and chugging along.  Life has been crazy, and fun, all at the same time.

If I get some time, I’ll sit down and give some updates.

Yes, Again 2009 has yeilded another consistancy.  I have been terrible at keeping up my blog, to the point that I’m almost positive nobody is reading it anymore anyways.

I guess what it boils down to is that life is just going right now.  Life isn’t good, it also isn’t bad, it just is.  Thats a weird feeling to have, but its stable.  Not much new to report on pretty much any front.  I still have my job, and my apartment, and all in all life is going along pretty good.  Not to say their couldn’t be improvements, but it is what it is.

Then again, maybe I am at least slightly down because winter has gotten the better of me.  I’m sure it’s something any Minnesotan can agree with.  Winter starts to get really old when your still seeing snow in April.  But baseball gets rolling again starting today, so spring can’t be far behind it, right?

And, add all that to the current economic conditions, and you have someone like me who is starting his own life suddenly desiring to live in survival mode, which is to say life is on “pause” right now.  I’m keeping a low profile to try to get that nest egg built up, and with any luck I might actually come out of this whole downturn in one peice.  Like I said, I’m still employed, and I hope to be for a long time to come, but these are uncertain times.  Blah blah blah insert another catchphrase here, i know i know.

This is not saying that I don’t still have some rather graphic opinions, because I do.  And I am in a period of “transition” that I can’t seem to get myself out of.  Life is changing, and has changed, yet I haven’t picked a path, nor have I found my new hobbies or expanded on my social circles as of yet.

So, I’ll try to keep updated here, and I still have some rather scathing words for my former favorite pay service, which was XM radio until 11/12/08, and my thoughts on some alternatives.  So, if your out there, keep your eyes on that monitor.

Life, an update…

So, I realized today that I have once again really been getting bad at not stopping by here to update things on a regular basis.  My last regular post was in October, and alot has happened since then.

Obviously, I am still living on my own, and really enjoying it.  Keeping my house clean, taking care of my kitties, and all the other little stuff that comes with it has been time consuming, but very fun.  I have been rather lucky in that I have been actively employed the entire time I have been moved out, so I have paid all of my bills on time or early with a little money to spare usually.  Doing this mostly on my own, I have overcome small challenges here and there, from little things like what to buy and eat, to bigger things like getting out stains and fixing minor plumbing problems.  I still work full time at my job, and still love every minute of it.

Secondly, my Grandma did pass away at the end of October.  We had a funeral service for her, and not much more can be said.  Rest in peace, grandma, you have been and will be missed.

Third, I have finally gotten an updated camera.  Its a Canon that I picked up on Black Friday for around $200.  I’ll be posting pictures somewhere, just haven’t decided where quite yet.

Lastly I have joined a Gym.  When I quit smoking last year I put on some weight, as expected.   I have been relatively steady, but unhappy with where I sit for a long time.  So, LA Fitness moved in, and provided I get in there 12 times a month, it will only cost me $15 a month.  Small price to pay for a smaller me.  I have decided that I will go three times per week, with an optional (or make up day) on a 4th day.  No more, no less.  What usually happened in the past is that I would go 6-7 times a week and get burnt out.  This would lead to me no longer going at all.  Once I get the cardio in check, I am going to start a rotating schedule of different excercises, with the goal of keeping the workout around 45 minutes to an hour long per time.

Well, thats alot for now.  I’ll have new years resolutions (that I probably won’t keep anyways, but they are fun!) later this week or next.

So, I was originally told when I was signed on with the current company that I work for, that I would be on a temp to hire contract that would last 3 months.  In talking to my two co-workers, who also started out as temps through this very agency, I started to realize that this might not be the case.  Upon several phone calls, I verified that 3 months was indeed the length of the contract.

Well, three months is up at the end of this week, and guess what?  Yup, rather than it being 480 hours (worked) it is 720.  So, I am a little frustrated, but take this in stride.  Nothing major, I still have a job, and I am still overpaying for COBRA.  I still love my job, and would work there as a temp for up to a year if it meant I would be hired.

But, this does do one thing that I am not thrilled about.  It pushes my move out date back, which I had already pushed back once because of this very thing.  See, its not that I can’t afford to move out, because I certainly can, rather its that it would be VERY tight under current circumstances.  When budgeting out my money, after everything is paid for I would have nothing left to put into savings, should say, my car bite the dust.

Whereas after my benefits kick in, even if I get hired at EXACTLY what I am making now (which is what I am counting on, FWIW), I will have between 3 and 4 hundred dollars left at the end of the month.

The other thing, and I don’t think this will be an issue but I do have to consider it, is that anywhere I choose to live will require a 1 year lease.  I have found a few apartment prospects within 4 miles of work, but would be stuck there in the unlikely event I do not get hired on at the end of my contract.  This scenario is pretty unlikely, but I do need to consider that when I am looking.

So, for now, its looking like August 1st for a move out date.  In the grand scheme of things, not that important.  I’d rather wait and be stable, than rush it and struggle.

So, living in MN, I am getting anxious for winter to be done.  This seems like the longest winter on record, at least recently.  And the worst part is, we were teased with 60’s and 70’s this past week.  But, as the weekend looms ahead, they are calling for sleet/snow tonight (yes, it IS almost May!) and cooler than average temperatures this weekend.

Those of you who have to sit in an office from 8-5 like myself have no fear!  The beautiful sun and warm temperatures will return just in time for you to not have the time to enjoy them ;).

Here’s hoping NEXT weekend is nice so I can get the car cleaned out!  I just realized that it’s been 7 monhs since the last “good” clean out (school distracted me long enough to not have the time before winter set in).

So, its absolutely amazing how time files whe your having fun.  Its hard for me to believe that it has already been a month, and yet I am still just as excited about it as I was on day one.

Not much else to report, I’m keeping a fairly low profile in my personal life these days.  Just trying to save as much money as possible, so I can meet my new goal of July 1st for a move out date.  See, I go permanent with this company on June 13th, and I didn’t want to move out until I can stop paying this nearly $400 COBRA insurance payment every month.

The weather here in MN has been kind of crappy, but I am hoping that next weekend it is nicer outside, so I can get my car nice and sparkily clean and get the trunk cleaned out.  Its not bad, just space I would like to take back.  In May, as part of the plan for moving out, I am going to start shopping Craigs list for furniture such as a coffee table, kitchen table, and maybe even a recliner or entertainment center.  And I’d also like to start picking up the little things like silverware, pots and pans, dishes, etc.

I’m so excited!

With that said, I am definitely still getting out and being social where I can, but after a hard week at work, it sometimes feels good to just come home on a Friday night, mix a few drinks, and turn on a good movie.  These days, I don’t seem to make it much past Midnight, and I can never seem to sleep in past 11AM either.  I guess a day job will do that to ya!

An update

Posted: March 30, 2008 in Computers, Work

So, it has been a while since my last post, and I thought I’d pop in and give an update.

The job is going very well.  Its been close to three weeks now, and I am finally getting used to the different schedule, although I am not up as late as I used to be even on the weekends.  I finally have the drive down to the right route.

Other than that, I am keeping a very low profile.  I am trying to save money for the move which will likely happen in July now.  I really wanted to move out in May, then the length of the hunt pushed it back to June, and now its really starting to look like July is going to make more sense.  By then, the temp in my temp to hire title will be gone, I will have insurance benefits and all the other benefits that come with having a permanent position.  And most importantly, I won’t have to pay for COBRA, which is about half of what my rent will be.

In other news, my computer’s power supply died this week.  I replaced it and had to rebuild the operating system from scratch, thankfully I did not lose any data!

Lovin the job so far!

So, for those of you keeping track, last Thursday I started what I deemed to be the job that I wanted since the first interview.

Its going absolutely great so far.  I spend about half the day at my desk, and the other half doing face to face help desk support type stuff for the company I work for.  So far, everyone is very nice, and they have all welcomed me with open arms.

Some of my schooling is coming in handy, while some stuff I was taught isn’t really practiced anymore.  Overall though, I’m still learning the ropes, and most of all the floorplan!  And getting used to this 8-5 thing is kinda crazy so far too, I mean I haven’t done it for so long now.  The worst thing about my job is the commute, but thats only on days like today when the weather isn’t the greatest.  Tomorrow is going to be just as bad weather wise, so I better sign off and get to bed so I can prepare for what might very well be an hour commute tomorrow.  On dry days, its about a 25 minute commute which is totally doable.

I will likely be moving out sometime from May to July, depending on how this all shakes out, but that will only trim about 5 minutes off my commute (and likely that 5 minutes will be replaced waiting for an elevator and navigating the garage LOL).

Still, anything less than a half an hour, by my book, is OK with me.  Especially since I will have neighbors who are friends of mine, and a location that is close to things yet far away at the same time.

I start my new job tomorrow

So, after two and a half years of schoool and two months of looking, I go back to work full time tomorrow.

I couldn’t be more excited.  Like I have said before, perfect company, perfect location, perfect pay.  The opprotunity for advancement and mental growth is also very big, which is very important to me as well.

I got a job!

Posted: March 6, 2008 in Personal, Work

After nearly two months of looking daily, and three months of unemployment, today I recieved, and accepted, a job offer.  The job is for a TERRIFIC company, pay is perfect, location is perfect, and the opprotunity for growth is literally unlimited.

Tomorrow, I have to go fill out paperwork, and then once the paperwork comes back, I should start the next day.  Paperwork should take approximately two days, so I should start work as soon as next Wednesday.  I am absolutely thrilled about this opprotunity, as it will allow me to move to the apartment building I want to move to, and since the pay is a little higher than I was expecting, I should be able to still accomplish that goal by May or June.
